D&D SRD Licensing Notice
Dungeons & Dragons SRD 5.1 and SRD 5.2.1 are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (“CC-BY-4.0”). This page records the attribution and usage position for TheCrazyGM's D&D rules lane.
Important: this is CC-BY-4.0, not a noncommercial or no-derivatives license. The key requirement is attribution.
Current Site Position
- The site's `dnd5e` lane should be treated as SRD 5.2.1 and forward.
- Legacy `SRD 5.1` material may be supported later if needed, but is not the primary D&D baseline for current site work.
- Future D&D data imports, public rules pages, and Forge defaults should follow the CC-BY-4.0 attribution requirements for the SRD version actually used.
What CC-BY-4.0 Means Here
- You may use, adapt, and publish material from the CC-licensed SRD, including commercially, as long as attribution is provided.
- This Creative Commons license is separate from the OGL 1.0a pages used for Pathfinder-derived material.
- D&D brand elements and non-SRD content remain outside this grant unless Wizards has separately released them.
Attribution Guidance
The D&D Beyond SRD page states that both SRD 5.1 and SRD 5.2 are available under CC-BY-4.0, and that future SRD versions will use Creative Commons exclusively.
For SRD 5.1, Wizards provides the following attribution language in the SRD preamble:
This work includes material taken from the System Reference Document 5.1 (“SRD 5.1”) by Wizards of the Coast LLC and available at https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/systems-reference-document. The SRD 5.1 is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License available at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode.
For SRD 5.2.1-based work, the same practical rule applies: clearly attribute Wizards of the Coast LLC as the source of the SRD material and identify the CC-BY-4.0 license.
