Entangled
The creature is ensnared by something — vines, webs, ropes, or similar restraints. It can still act but is significantly hampered in movement and combat.
Effects
- –2 penalty on attack rolls.
- –4 penalty to Dexterity.
- Cannot move unless the entangling effect allows it (e.g., a web anchored to a surface prevents movement; a tanglefoot bag halves speed instead).
- If not anchored in place, the creature can move at half speed.
- Casting spells while entangled requires a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level), or the spell is lost.
- 15% arcane spell failure chance in addition to any armor-based failure, if the entangling effect wraps the body.
Ending the Condition
- The creature can attempt to break free with an Escape Artist check or a Strength check (DC set by the entangling effect).
- Freedom of movement prevents entanglement entirely and allows immediate escape if already entangled.
- Destroying the entangling effect (e.g., cutting a web, dispelling a entangle spell) ends the condition.
- Some effects have a duration after which entanglement ends automatically.
Related Conditions
- Grappled — similarly restricts movement and imposes penalties, but results from a creature's hold rather than an environmental effect.
- Pinned — a more severe version of grappled; entangled creatures cannot be pinned by the entangling effect itself.
- Prone — sometimes applied alongside entangled by area effects like entangle.
