Dexterity (DEX) measures agility, reflexes, and fine motor control. It governs your ability to dodge attacks, aim ranged weapons, and move with precision. DEX is the most broadly useful defensive stat — it feeds AC, Reflex saves, initiative, and a cluster of highly-used skills. Armor limits how much DEX bonus you can apply to AC.

What Dexterity Affects

Stat / Check How DEX applies
Armor Class (AC) DEX modifier added to AC — subject to the armor's maximum DEX bonus cap
Reflex saving throw DEX modifier added to all Reflex saves
Initiative DEX modifier added to initiative rolls at the start of combat
Ranged attack rolls DEX modifier added to all ranged attack rolls (bows, crossbows, thrown weapons)
Acrobatics DEX is the key ability
Disable Device DEX is the key ability
Escape Artist DEX is the key ability
Fly DEX is the key ability
Ride DEX is the key ability
Sleight of Hand DEX is the key ability
Stealth DEX is the key ability

Armor and Maximum DEX Bonus

Each armor type limits how much of your DEX modifier applies to AC. If your DEX modifier exceeds the armor's maximum DEX bonus, the excess is lost. A DEX penalty always applies in full regardless of armor.

Armor Category Max DEX Bonus Example armors
No armor / Clothing Unlimited Monk, unarmored characters — full DEX applies
Light armor +3 to +8 Padded (+8), Leather (+6), Chain shirt (+4), Mithral shirt (+6)
Medium armor +1 to +3 Hide (+4), Scale mail (+3), Chainmail (+2), Breastplate (+3)
Heavy armor +0 to +1 Splint mail (+0), Banded mail (+1), Half-plate (+0), Full plate (+1)
Shield No cap Shields do not impose a max DEX penalty
Flat-footed and DEX to AC. When you are flat-footed or otherwise denied your DEX bonus, your DEX modifier does not apply to AC — even if it is positive. A negative DEX modifier always applies regardless of flat-footed status.

DEX to Melee Damage

By default, DEX does not add to melee damage rolls — that is STR's job. Two exceptions exist:

Weapon Finesse (feat) Lets you use DEX instead of STR for attack rolls with light weapons and certain other weapons — but not damage rolls by default
Agile (weapon property) An agile weapon lets you use DEX instead of STR for damage rolls when using Weapon Finesse — this is the standard DEX-to-damage route for finesse builds
Dervish Dance (feat) Allows DEX to damage with a scimitar specifically, while using it one-handed and having the other hand free (requires Weapon Finesse, Dance proficiency)
