Lawful Evil

Alignment

Lawful Evil is the alignment of methodical domination. A Lawful Evil creature pursues power, wealth, or control through structure, hierarchy, and ruthless enforcement of rules that serve its interests. It is disciplined, patient, and organized — and it uses order as a weapon rather than a shield. Lawful Evil is often the most dangerous alignment because its cruelty is sustainable and predictable.

LE
The Dominator
Core Beliefs
  • Might makes right — but might is best exercised through law.
  • Rules exist to protect those who write them.
  • Weakness deserves to be exploited.
  • Hierarchy is natural; some are meant to rule, others to serve.

Behavior Notes

Lawful Evil characters follow rules — their own rules, the rules they've agreed to, or the rules that happen to benefit them. They honour contracts to the letter (not the spirit), keep oaths when it serves them, and wield legality as cover for exploitation. They are predictable, which makes them reliable allies in the short term and dangerous enemies in the long term.

The defining quality is that LE characters achieve evil ends through legitimate or rule-bound means. A slaving lord who owns slaves legally, pays taxes on the trade, and follows all local laws while doing so is Lawful Evil. A devil who honours every contract while engineering the damnation of souls is the archetype.

Mechanical Notes

  • Opposed alignment: Chaotic Good.
  • Devils: The quintessential LE outsiders — lawful fiends of Hell who deal in contracts and eternal servitude. Both Evil and Lawful subtypes apply.
  • Unholy + axiomatic: LE characters can wield both unholy (vs Good) and axiomatic (vs Chaos) weapons without penalty.
  • DR notation: Many devils have DR/good or DR/chaotic — both must be overcome to bypass their resistance.
